A house fire from a 9 volt battery?  That certainly got our attention.  It is frightening to consider how such a common household item could cause so much damage.  The home in the video below burned to the ground because of a simple thing that the homeowner didn't know.  To avoid this from happening: Secure your 9 volt batteries properly, always keep them in their packages, don't carry them in your pocket, and cover the terminals of all loose 9 volt batteries with electrical tape.

Here are more fire safety tips to keep in mind for your home:

  1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.  Test smoke alarms every month.
  2. Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.  Plan to have at least 2 different routes out of your home.  Click here to Make A Fire Safety Plan
